Mission in Iraq
Operation “Iraqi Freedom”
On May 22, 2003, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for assistance to the Iraqi people in rebuilding the country. The Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in accordance with its international obligations to ensure international peace and security, decided to respond to the appeal of the UNSC and send an engineering and sapper unit to assist the Iraqi people. In accordance with the Resolution of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated May 30, 2003, an engineering unit of the Kazakhstan peacekeeping battalion "KAZBAT" was sent to participate in peacekeeping activities in the Stabilization Forces in Iraq.
The main tasks of the Kazakhstan division were:
  • Search and destruction of unexploded ordnance
  • Equipment of field water supply points
  • Water purification and medical assistance to the local population
Results of participation in the operation:
  • More than 4 million unexploded ordnances have been destroyed; 
  • About 7000 cubic meters of water have been purified;
  • 4.5 km of blast barriers have been installed around the Delta base;
  • Medical assistance has been provided to more than 5,000 local residents;
  • 572 cadets of the Iraqi Military Academy have been trained in field engineering.

In total, 290 servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan were sent to the Republic of Iraq as part of the coalition forces during the period from 2003 to 2008.
