LAW of ARMED CONFLICT (LoAC)
Course Description
The curriculum was designed and developed in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross. Law of armed conflict establishes protection for civilians, other non-combatants as well as combatants, and limits methods and means of warfare in armed conflict. The rules seek to balance fundamental principles of humanity against military necessity.
Course aim

The goal is to increase knowledge and experience in Law of armed conflict International Humanitarian Law applicable to peace operations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students are expected to gain knowledge of the followings issues:
  • The historic development of International Humanitarian Law
  • The principle on proportionality and military necessity, the principle of distinction between military objectives and civilian objects, as well as the prohibition against means of warfare that may lead to unnecessary suffering and superfluous injury
  • The scope of application of International Humanitarian Law in different levels of conflict
  • The limitations on means and methods of armed conflicts
  • Combatant status and its implications
  • Protection of prisoners of war (POW)
  • Protection of civilians and non-combatants
  • Protection of cultural property
  • International peace operations
  • The method and sources of international public law in general, and the sources of IHL in particular
COURSE NOTES
  • Duration: 5-10 days (1-2 week)

    Course period: November 11-15, 2024
  • Seat allocation: 25 participants

  • Training audience: Employees of national and regional governmental agencies. The course is open to NATO, PfP, MD, ICI and other nations as approved
  • Course language: English
  • Security clearance: Unclassified
