The curriculum was designed and developed in cooperation with the U.S. Defense Institute of International Legal Studies and International Committee of the Red Cross. The course familiarizes students with types of law applicable to peace support operations and explains why understanding and acting in accordance with the law is vital to mission success. It also provides students with understanding of the role and importance of the ICRC and NGOs.
Course aim
The goal is to increase knowledge and experience in International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, International Internally Displaced Person & Refugee Law, International Criminal Law, as well as National Law applicable to peace support operations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
Identify key provisions of major documents used in a peace operation
Identify and analyze key legal issues in hypothetical peace operation scenarios
Recite the rights and responsibilities of the key components of a peace operation
Identify potential challenges and possible unintended consequences of military component actions in peace operations
Gain a foundation of knowledge in an International Law that will allow them to continue developing their knowledge
Understand their own pivotal role and contribution to the peace operation
