Seminar on “Respect for human rights in peacekeeping operations under United Nations auspices”

In the period from 17-21 of September 2018 on the basis of the “Partnership for Peace” training centre (KAZCENT) the instructors from the US Defense Institute of International Legal Studies conducted a seminar on “Respect for human rights in peacekeeping operations under the UN auspices”. The seminar was conducted in English, with a consecutive translation into Russian.
The goal of this seminar was to train the instructors of the KAZCENT and the military personnel of the Kazakhstan peacekeeping regiment in matters of respecting human rights in peacekeeping operations under the UN auspices.
The main points of discussion during this seminar were:
-Human rights and terrorism;
-Commanders' responsibility in case of violation of human rights;
-International armed conflict;
-Internal armed conflict;
-Violence of criminal groups;
-Rules of engagement's review;
-Rules on the use of weapons;
-Legal advisor's role in peacekeeping missions;
-Army legal officers' transparency in peacekeeping missions.
Bearing in mind the importance of strengthening the peacekeeping potential of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the participants of this course will be able to apply the knowledge obtained, while working in international environment in various peacekeeping operations conducted by Kazakhstan under the UN auspices, and also while participating in international military exercises.
